Vermont is full of different things to do, but at the core, it’s a healthy place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature and the taste of fresh, locally grown foods.
Whether you like skiing, skating, hiking, backpacking, biking, fishing, boating, playing golf, foliage watching, apple-picking or sightseeing, Vermont has a lot to offer. There are a variety of accommodations to suit your mood and budget – from big, elegant resorts to mid-sized country inns to small, quaint bed & breakfasts. Each offers its own brand of Vermont charm.
Vermont’s cities run the gamut from urban and chic to rural and rustic. Burlington, Vermont’s largest city has approximately 39,000 year-round residents, is home to the University of Vermont, and is the state’s primary cultural center. Brattleboro, a town known for its eclectic tastes and lifestyle, has about 8,500 residents, and Montpelier, the state capital, has approximately 8,000. Stowe, one of the state’s many wonderful ski resorts, has approximately 4,000.
Environmentally-Minded
Vermont has long been a leader in protecting the environment and this extends to the state’s business and agriculture practices as well. The Vermont Organic Farmers group led the development of the country’s first national organic certification program and Vermonters have happily embraced the trend towards 100% natural and organic including supporting local grown foods and sustainable farming practices. These efforts also help support family farms and sustain the working landscape of Vermont that visitors seek and others dream about.
Local foods also taste better. That includes apples of course. Vermont is home to many apple orchards, some open seasonally for farmstand sales and pick-your-own. If you are in the state, they are fun and beautiful places to visit. Here’s a reasonably comprehensive list.
